CCTV & Surveillance Policy

Fremantle Lodge is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our guests, staff, and property. For this purpose, we have installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in designated public and common areas of the premises.

1. Purpose of CCTV Surveillance

The use of CCTV at our hostel is intended to:

  • Enhance the safety and security of guests, staff, and visitors;
  • Deter and assist in the prevention, detection, and investigation of criminal activity or misconduct;
  • Protect hostel property and assets;
  • Support the enforcement of hostel rules and policies.

2. Locations Under Surveillance

CCTV cameras are installed in clearly visible locations within public and communal areas only, including:

  • Walkways and corridors
  • Reception and entrance points
  • Shared lounges or communal spaces

We do not install CCTV cameras in private spaces such as:

  • Guest rooms
  • Bathrooms
  • Showers or change rooms
  • Any other area where individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy

This is in accordance with the Surveillance Devices Act 1998 (WA).

3. Legal Basis and Compliance

Our surveillance activities are conducted in line with:

  • The Privacy Act 1988 (Cth); and
  • The Surveillance Devices Act 1998 (WA), which prohibits the use of optical surveillance devices in private areas without consent.

4. Management and Retention of Footage

  • CCTV footage is securely stored and access is restricted to authorised staff only.
  • Footage may be disclosed to law enforcement, insurers, or other third parties where required or permitted by law.
  • All CCTV recordings are retained for a maximum period of 12 months, unless required for an ongoing investigation or legal matter, after which they are securely deleted or destroyed.

5. Signage and Notification

Signs are clearly displayed at the entrance and in monitored areas to notify individuals that CCTV surveillance is in operation.

6. Access and Privacy Rights

You may request access to footage containing your personal information, subject to verification and any applicable exemptions under privacy law. To make a request or ask a question about our CCTV practices, please contact:
